Only about 15 minutes from Oaxaca is a small town called Santa Maria del Tule. Right in the town center by the colonial cathedral is one of the largest trees in the world. This ancient cyprus tree is over 2000 year old and about 100 feet in diameter. The redwoods in California were the tallest trees I had ever seen, but this one is definitely the widest! For perspective, you can see a man walking around the backside of the tree in the photo.

There was a tree in our woods growing up that, to children, was so enormously large. We named it “Grandfather Tree” and often hugged it. Random, but you took me back to that backyard woods…

Nice looking tree. I’m not sure if I’ll get down to Mexico, but if I do, it will probably be in 5 to 10 years. This looks like a good sight to keep in mind.
It is really quite an attractive tree.
