Tourists Under Hats

Drifting from the snack food stand,
down the sidewalk toward the band
float the hats that match in style,
looking like they’ll stay awhile.
Like lilly pads far from the pond
They meet each other and respond
By laughing since they hit the brims
That stretched out farther than the limbs
Of trees where width outgrows the height,
Making a simply silly sight.

Oaxaca’s Artisans

Oaxaca is replete with artisan’s markets.  Wes and I have enjoyed immensely visiting various markets where indigenous artisans make and sell their craft. Everywhere you go in Oaxaca, you find artisans selling hand-crafted and carved pottery, naturally died and hand-woven rugs, shirts, skirts, dresses, and scarves that are hand-woven and elaborately embroidered, necklaces and bracelets [...]

It Tastes like Mexico

It tastes like Mexico, she said.
And I wonder:
how can a drink
taste like a country?
But then again,
how can a conversation
leave a bad taste?
And how can a team
have tasted blood?
How can revenge
be like tasting medicine?
If experiences, feelings, and actions
can have a taste,
then I guess a drink
can taste like a country.
It tastes like Mexico.
